my winter clothes essentials - horse chores outfits

Sharing my must have winter boots, coat, and clothing items. Just the bare essentials that I couldn't live with out...well, I would be very sad without!! I am a stay at home mom so I live in very casual clothes most of the time. If you work, these would be great weekend or evening outfits if you're headed to the barn.

leggings and cowboy boots outfit

olive leggings with fringe cowgirl boots, long brown cardi, and blanket scarf
Sometimes you just feel like wearing leggings!! I stumbled on THIS pair while Christmas shopping, and they have been on heavy rotation every since!! They are really thick and have super cool seaming detail that make them a little more interesting than plain 'ol leggings!! I really love how the olive color of the leggings pairs with the tan of my fringe cowgirl boots and cardi! If I am wearing leggings as a outfit (as in not to workout in) I generally like to keep the front and backside covered with a long cardi or tunic top...BUT these leggings are so thick you could totally get away with wearing them as pants. A blanket scarf is not only a stylish addition to any outfit, its also a great way to snuggle up on long car rides or at a restaurant. Forming the scarf into a triangle and draping it over the shoulders is a nice way to change it up from just wearing it around your neck! Sometimes that can just feel claustrophobic and a pain if out to dinner. What's your favorite way to rock leggings?

fringe cowgirl boots outfit with denim jacket and skinny jeans

cowboy boots and skinny jeans. women roper boots.
Everyday fabulous!! So much of the western fashion that I see on Pinterest and Instagram is stunning, but not wearable (to me) for my life the majority of the time. Kind of the same way that a lot of popular couture fashion Instagram accounts are. They share beautiful outfits that I would never wear or (lets be real) spend that much money on. I don't want to say afford, because if I gave up my horse habit I could possibly buy one or two pieces. So like a dress or a bag, but that would pretty much do me in! Hahaha. That is never happening. My goal is to show ways for you to easily incorporate cowboy boots and aa bit of western vibe in your everyday life. Cowgirl or not!! My last blog post I talked about personal style, and the desire to remain classic in a world of never-ending trends that change week to week. The incredibly thing about cowboy boots is they are forever in style. There are so many amazing cowgirl boot options on the market right now that you are sure to find a style that suits you. I love a short cowboy boot for a more casual feel. Its a style that anyone can rock confidently. Speaking of classics...Have I mentioned I LOVE turtlenecks? I am completely smitten with the tunic length of this ONE and it comes in a variety of colors. Th perfect shirt you can get three seasons of wear out of depending on how you layer it. I paired a cropped denim jacket over the tunic length shirt here to give some waist definition and break up the pattern. This was before the deep freeze we are experiencing now mind you! BUT simply put a long wool coat on over that denim jacket and you bill layering like a boss (plus be warm)!!

winter cowgirl boots outfit with jeans

old navy tall, boots and jeans outfit, tony lama cowgirl boots, shearling vest outfit
Loving this outfit for a cute and cozy take on layering for winter. The added collar detail the shearling vest gives this look on trend yet retro western feels that I dig! Plus, its so very cozy!! THIS burgundy coat has become a quick favorite for throwing on with jeans and a turtleneck or long sleeve tee for a slightly more polished feel to my go to basics. Speaking of basics...you simply cannot go wrong with high waisted jeans and a turtleneck. Its as functional as it is chic, and its TIMELESS. Which is above all else, despite maybe a random outfit, is how I want my style to be.

  • Do you ever think about what your style is?
  • What words you would use to describe it?
  • How someone else would describe your style?

Determining your personal style is not always easy, and may take some time. I recommend taking a quick snap of your outfit everyday in a full length mirror, and even if you don't post it to social media ...just keep them stored on your phone in a special folder. Don't forget the back view!! Overtime you will start to see patterns of what styles you gravitate toward, what colors you like and work best on you, and most importantly what doesn't work. It's amazing what shows up in a picture that is not visible when you just look in the mirror!!

I love staying up on trends and all things fashion. I do have a fashion blog after all;-), but that being said I try to find ways to stay true my style esthetic while still remaining current with whats happening. Like incorporating shearling. It's everywhere at the moment, but its also something that has remained through the decades. Sure its popularity may hit peaks and valleys, but shearling is a classic style that will be around for years to come.

On the other side of the trend coin...jeans. Jeans the last couple years have been all over the place...cropped, raw hem, embriodereied, embellished, cropped flare, step hem, weird seaming, and that doesn't even cover the basics of skinny, boot, straight, and flare jeans (read more in this Man Repeller article). That is simply exhausting, and too expensive for this small town midwest gal!! Simple dark wash jeans will always be in style. Those embellished, cropped flare jeans are going to be out as quick as they came in. I also feel like we can all start to look the same if we go with that so hot it burns your wallet trendy item that literally every blogger is wearing. Cue the Chloe Faye bag or now the Gucci belt. Or on a more small town, middle America level a Coach bag that is covered in their logo so many times they out to pay you to carry it. Is it style or status we are after with those types of items? I'm guilty too, and can find myself lusting after something just like the next girl. Maybe because we are inundated with images of them?!  When that happens I try to remember those questions in the beginning of this post, and what my style is to remain true to me, not a trend or it item. My deep (first world problems) thoughts to start 2018 off on the right style note.

aztec sweater outfit with cowgirl boots, skinny jeans, and felt hat

tall cowgirl boots outfit with skinny jeans, aztec cardi, and cowboy hat
All the western vibes in this outfit post. My personal style leans towards classic pieces, usually minimal accessories, and my western, cowgirl style is no different. This blue aztec/geo print cardi coat gives a nod to traditional country dress, but remains true to me with its understated tonal blue pattern. I paired a white button up under it adds a bit of sophistication and chicness. The felt hat is a recent, much needed purchase. I plan to show Scotch and Scarlet this summer, and fell in love with the taupey/grey color that will coordinate well with many different show outfits. Dark wash, high rise skinny jeans are a wardrobe staple that will go with everything and make you look stylish and skinny!! Winning!

Looking at my beauty and to the future... So excited to see where this year takes us both!! I have been slacking the last couple weeks over Christmas break with all things Fashioned for Living as far as posting and such, BUT I have been in deep thought (the wheels were grinding;-)) about how I want to continue on. I started blogging two years ago December...time really does fly! I have been trying to figure out where I fit in with my brand of western fashion while still incorporating my real life everyday style, how to mix more of "me" on a personal level, AND how to include all things horses.

My big life goal for 2018 is to show horses again. I haven't shown in a really, really long time...so long I can't really remember the last show I was entered in. Probably because it was just another show at the time, and taking a break from the show ring wasn't a conscious decision. It just happened with the demands of school, sports, and working. You are a witness to dreams coming true for me, dreams that have been on hold for decades. We purchased Scarlet (the grey) a coming two year old and Scotch (bay pictured above) a green almost four year old last summer. Both mares are the fanciest horses on paper (for lack of a better way to put it) that I have ever owned. I find great joy in working with green horses and teaching them all my bad habits, and not trying to overcome someones else's. I say this in gist, but there's a bit of truth to it AND green horses are in my price range! We plan to start small at some local fun shows, get back in the swing of things, and hopefully advance from there. Though I have a tiny bit of knowledge and experience, I AM NOT A EXPERT!! I have so much to learn and I am really excited to take y'all along for that journey!

SO, I am not exactly sure how this going to manifest on my blog, Instagram, and YouTube but I am just going to try things and see what works best for everyone.
What kind of content would you like to see in the new year?
Thank you for being here. Audra
