family physical fitness - driveway basketball
Shooting hoops in our driveway is one of my favorite mother son activities. Seeing my son, Everett's face light up when he makes a basket or passes me the ball to shoot is such a joy!! This will be Everett's first year playing on a organized basketball team, though he's played soccer and baseball for a couple years.
Sports can be an amazing way to learn life lessons. Like working hard at something to improve a skill. Everett set a goal for himself to make six baskets every night. This may not seem like much, but Everett has made huge improvements all on his own shooting through this small goal. We are working on other skills too, like you don't always get to play when and where you want to, and you have to make sacrifices for the betterment of the team.
Everett is kind hearted. He doesn't care if the team wins or loses, he is just there to have fun and improve his skills. The pressure to be the best can turn kids away from wanting to play organized sports because the feel they can't compete or take the disappointment they feel. I understand the competitive drive that can bubble up from the sidelines, and have had to check myself as well! I think its so important to shift the attention away from the scoreboard and to what the child is feeling. AND for my little guy, it's the achievements he has made since the last practice or game. Remembering that my words are so important after the activity, possibly more important than the game or practice itself, and I need to chose them thoughtfully.
Facilitating a person's love for a sport can be a source of lifelong happiness and physical fitness. Maybe, just maybe if we spent less time on the couch watching sports and more time playing we would be a fitter and slimmer nation! This is my absolute favorite type of exercise, the kind I don't consciously know I am doing!! The whole family can practice jumps shots, bounce passes, and play pig getting our heart rate up all the while we are having fun! AND doing an activity together that gets us up and out of the house!!
My son also really enjoys running or racing Mama and Daddy. He giggles and runs circles around us hopping and jumping the entire way! Sometimes, when we get home from school he even sprints up the driveway before coming in the house after being cooped up all day.
Everett and I have had the pleasure to test out some new Adidas gear. My kicks are the Adidas Utraboost X All Terain in black/grey, and I am loving them. Each shoes fits like a sock over your foot, are extremely light weight and comfortable. To me the next best thing to being barefoot. I have been wearing them nonstop for the past few weeks with jeans and leggings alike. They are on the pricer end of sneakers, but they are not just your average tennis shoe with water resistant material and a spring like cushion that feels like its literally pushing your foot forward on to the next step! If you are physically active, a runner or just want to be uber cool and comfortable I highly recommend them. Everett is wearing the kids Rapidarun in red. He is a loyal Adidas wearer making this the 3rd pair, and he is loving these just as much as the others. Everett also got his first pair of cool guy SST Track Pants. He is a avid sweat pants kid so its great to have a little nicer option for casual wear, and to wear over shorts to basketball games this winter.
Thank you to Adidas for partnering with Everett and I on this post. Staying physically fit can be as fun as it is important!! I love be able to share in that joy with my family while keeping us strong and healthy. Having the right gear that makes you feel cute and excited to workout can be key to your fitness success. I know it is for me!
